What to Wear to Yoga: The Only Three Things That Matter

A top that stays out of your face in downward dog is the entire specification.

Nobody has ever practised worse yoga because of their clothes, but plenty of beginners have spent a whole class pulling their top out of their face.

There are exactly three requirements, and none of them involves spending money.

The three requirements#

  1. A top that stays put when you are upside down. In downward dog and forward folds a loose t-shirt falls over your face. Fitted, or long enough to tuck, is the whole specification.
  2. A waistband that does not dig in when you fold forward. Soft, wide and without a hard button or a thick seam at the front.
  3. Bare feet. Yoga is practised without shoes and without ordinary socks, because grip is a safety issue. Grip socks are an option for cold floors or if bare feet are uncomfortable for you.

What works, in practice#

What to Wear to Yoga: The Only Three Things That Matter — What works, in practice
ItemLook forAvoid
TopFitted or tuckable, breathableLoose crop tops, anything with a hood
BottomsSoft waistband, some stretch, mid or full lengthHard buttons, thick seams at the hip or knee, anything slippery
LayersA light long-sleeved layer for savasanaZips at the back, which are uncomfortable lying down
UnderwearWhatever you would exercise inAnything that shows through light-coloured leggings when you fold
FeetBare, or grip socks with rubber dotsOrdinary socks — genuinely a slipping hazard

Squat-test light-coloured leggings before wearing them to a class. Thin fabric becomes transparent under stretch, and it is far better to discover that at home.

Style-specific notes#

  • Hot yoga: minimal, quick-drying fabric, and bring two towels — one for the mat and one for you. Cotton becomes a wet weight within ten minutes.
  • Yin and restorative: layers, socks and something warm. You cool down considerably when you stop moving for five minutes at a time.
  • Vinyasa: as for hot yoga but lighter; you will sweat more than you expect.
  • Home practice: whatever you slept in. The main reason morning routines fail is that getting changed is a decision.
  • Chair or office yoga: ordinary work clothes are fine for everything in a seated sequence.

What you do not need#

The yoga clothing market is enormous, well designed and largely aimed at people who already practise. Almost none of it improves your yoga.

  • Branded leggings. A supermarket pair that fits and is not see-through performs identically.
  • Yoga-specific tops. Any fitted sports top or tucked t-shirt does the job.
  • Compression garments, which are a running and cycling product.
  • Special yoga underwear, gloves or toe separators.
  • A new outfit as a motivation strategy. The evidence that buying kit produces a habit is not encouraging.

A note on comfort and self-consciousness#

Wear what lets you stop thinking about your body in a room full of people, because that is the actual function of yoga clothing. For some people that is fitted; for others it is loose and long. Both are correct. If a studio makes you feel that a particular look is expected, that is information about the studio rather than about you, and there will be another one nearby whose beginner class feels different.

Frequently asked questions

What should I wear to my first yoga class?

A fitted or tuckable t-shirt, comfortable leggings or soft shorts with no hard waistband, and bare feet. That is the complete list. Bring a light long-sleeved layer for the final relaxation, when you cool down quickly. Nothing needs to be bought specially — sports clothing you already own is almost certainly fine.

Can you wear socks during yoga?

Ordinary socks are a genuine slipping hazard in standing poses and should be avoided. Grip socks with rubber dots on the sole are a reasonable alternative if your feet get cold, if you have a foot condition, or if bare feet in a studio is uncomfortable for you. Most people practise barefoot because it gives the best feedback about where your weight is.

Do I need special yoga clothes?

No. The requirements are that your top stays put when you fold forward, your waistband does not dig in, and your bottoms are not transparent under stretch. Any sports clothing meets that, and so does a lot of ordinary clothing. Buying an outfit before a first class is a common and entirely optional ritual.
